What is Single Implant & Crown

A single dental implant is a titanium screw surgically inserted into your jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once integrated with the bone, it supports an abutment and a custom-made crown that looks and functions like a natural tooth. This option preserves adjacent teeth (unlike bridges) and prevents bone loss in the jaw, providing a permanent, natural-looking solution.

Procedure Overview

  • Consultation and Imaging: Initial consultation, 3D CBCT scans, and digital impressions to assess bone density and plan placement.

  • Tooth Extraction (if necessary): Removal of damaged or decayed tooth.

  • Bone Grafting (if needed): If there is insufficient bone, a grafting procedure is done to build up the jawbone.

  • Implant Placement: Titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia.

  • Healing Period: 3-4 months for osseointegration — the process where bone grows around and stabilizes the implant.

  • Abutment & Crown Placement: Once healed, an abutment is attached to the implant and a crown is custom-fitted.

  • Post-Op Visits: Follow-ups to ensure proper healing and function.

FAQs

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for a single implant?

We evaluate your medical history, oral health, and bone quality via CBCT scans and examinations. Good candidates generally have adequate bone in the area (or are eligible for grafting), are non‑smokers or willing to quit, have controlled systemic health (e.g. diabetes under control), and maintain good hygiene. Some conditions like severe uncontrolled medical disease or radiation therapy in the jaw area could complicate implant success.

If bone volume (height or width) is insufficient, we may perform bone grafting (using autograft, allograft, or synthetic bone) to build up the area before placing the implant. Sometimes, grafting and healing occur first, then the implant is placed. In other cases, grafting and implant placement are done in the same procedure (depending on stability). The extra grafting adds time to the treatment, but helps ensure the implant’s long-term success.

Yes, though failure is rare. Causes can include infection (peri‑implantitis), poor bone integration (if the implant doesn’t properly fuse with bone), excessive loading too early, poor oral hygiene, or systemic factors (e.g. smoking, uncontrolled diabetes). If failure occurs, we typically remove the implant, allow the area to heal, address underlying issues (e.g. infection, bone deficiency), and then attempt replacement.

Immediately after surgery, you’ll follow a soft or bland diet. Over the first few weeks, you can gradually introduce firmer foods, avoiding anything excessively hard or crunchy in the implant area. Once the implant has fully integrated and the crown is placed, you may resume a full diet—though avoiding extremely hard items (e.g. shell nuts, ice) is recommended. Your clinician will monitor and guide progression.

You care for an implant much like a natural tooth. Brush twice daily with a low‑abrasive toothpaste, use floss or interdental brushes around the implant, and consider water flossers for accessibility. Use antimicrobial rinses as recommended. Attend professional cleanings and reviews (every 3–6 months). Avoid smoking, which increases risk of complications. Monitoring tissue and bone around the implant is critical to long-term success.
